BRITISH
IOPD 50CC QUAD X CHAMPION AT JUST
10 YEARS OLD
Callum's News Champion Contender March 2007: Callum is now a British championship contender and hopes to win the British championship with his new Cobra ecx50 this year. To the best of our knowledge, he is the first kid in Britain to have one of these excredible Cobra bikes imported in from the USA (see Callum's gallery for pictures). Hopefully he will win his group and be the 2007 British champion and for his rewards he will get a factory works ride in America for a month. Callum will contest all rounds of the British to try to secure this title as the reward is huge for him. Callum
would like to thank his new sponsors already for their support. His
new fuel sponsors Petrochem Carless Racing Fuels, Ed Davies racing,
Fox Europe, Maxspeed Motorsport, and Eagle Signs. Callum would like
to thank Neil McClelland the importer for working hard with Cobra Moto
to make this happen here in the UK. Manby Fun Weekend Callum went to the Manby Fun weekend in August 2006 and entered the three day meeting. He entered into the 85cc modified class which is bigger than his usual class. The first day was grass track and this was Callum's best discipline. He started off very cautious and the rules in England were a little different to the Welsh rules; no parents at the start line, no helping them out on the track, etc, so Callum went to the start on his own and was very professional about it all. He holshoted the start but the more powerful bikes eventually overhauled him, he maintained third place for the day and finished a fantastic 3rd overall for the day. Day 2 was motocross and he did not do his best racing, but there were 30 bikes on a grid and it didn’t faze him. He did his best and finished 7th overall in his group, but all the others were on 85cc and Callum on a 50cc, so the result was very good for his first time. Day 3 was supermoto half tarmac half dirt. Callum had never done this before and there were big jumps and tight bends and slippy tarmac. He finished an incredible 4th overal,l just outside the trophys. On the last race of the day Spencer Taylor (Welsh quad tuner guru), Conner Taylor's farther, said "I have a bigger bike here. Callum you can borrow it for the last race." So, with that callum changed bike on the last race and rode it with confidence and did the whole race no problems. Callum would like to thank the Taylor family for all their generosity and support, and Spencer since has been working on Callum's motocross quad for 2007. Callum is hooked and wants more jumps and bumps. Callum also finished a brilliant 4th overall in the grassrtack championship here in Wales a fantastic achievement for his first year in class 4. Callum would like to thank Fox Europe, elf racing fuels, Maxspeed motorsport, JLF Designs, Eagle Signs and P1 garage equipment, and all who have took him racing this year due his farther having a 12 month driving ban for Dangerous driving!
2007 season Callum has progressed to a new quad for this season he is riding a new ecx50cc Cobra. He's waiting for this to arrive from America. Its the latest thing in youth quad bikes. It's been engineered by Edd Davis racing who Callum will be supported by this season. Edd Davis will be Callum's mentor for 2007 as Edd is an accomplished quad racer in Britain, having titles and over 30 British champion under his belt. Edd will be coaching and maintaining callums bike for 2007. Callum also retains some old sponsors; we are delighted to announce that Fox Europe are staying with Callum along with Eagle Signs and Maxspeed Motorsport. He has a new sponsor on board, Careless Racing Fuels who are the world record holders for racing scooters with the scooter land speed record which is all down to the specially developed fuel for two stroke engines.
Callum Wins Both Championships Out of 15 races Callum came first overall 6 times and on the other occasions was a consistent second or third, excepts for days off with mechanical problems. He is now West Wales’s Junior Class1 Quad Champion and Bancyfelin MCC Champion and Preseli MCC Champion. The last meeting was at Preseli motor club and his day was not straight forward. In practice the bike didn’t seem right, but his father checked it over and it seemed ok. But Callum's dad did admit it wouldn’t rev hard and suggested Callum just try it and see. Unfortunately the bike failed in the first race whilst Callum was in the lead by half a lap. As Callum's father rushed over to assist, he found the fuel pipe had been fractured but with quick work managed to get it going sufficiently for Callum to still manage to finish in sixth place, quite an achievement given the bikes condition. Callum then took the bike to pieces and helped his father strip it down, replacing all the pipes. Then, with determination and coolness he decided to return to the grid saying, “Don’t worry I can do it Dad”. The odds were against him as he returned. He had to win the next two races to take the championship, and doubtful fans and onlookers were equally excited and disappointed. But that quickly changed. Callum holeshoted the gate (took the lead) and ripped down the track like he had stolen the bike! He lapped two riders and won the race by a mile. The last race was
different as he faced a tough competitor who quickly took the lead.
Another rider left the pack and the three of them fought for position,
trading places frequently. But Callum left it until
the last lap, drew level with the other two, then overtook them an
won it on the last turn. He is a true champion and he took
it
all
in
his
stride
at just 8 years
old.
About Callum Callum lives with his mother Lindsay and his older brother Max and younger sister Ffyion and goes to junior school in Newcastle Emlyn. He comes from a motorsport background and his farther, Ian Carter, the legendary Maxspeed Motorsport guru in West Wales, is always with him at quad meetings as his chief technician In the summer of 2004, Callum started competing in junior quad racing for the first time. These events are packed with eager competitors, some as young as 4. But these youngsters are surprisingly skilled and very competitive, riding powerful machines that are specially tuned to reach speeds of up to 40mph. Callum is hoping to be the welsh junior quad champion this season and has been practicing hard over the winter. Callum rides a Suzuki LT50 quad racer tuned by his farther at the Maxspeed workshop, and takes an active part in preparing his bike - deciding on what size sprockets he wants on different events, etc, and of course the worst job - cleaning it all down. Quad bikes aren't the only thing Callum loves. He regularly takes out his new KTM pro senior which he'll also be riding in the new 2005 season.
